iOS 11 allows you to set up notifications for certain HomeKit accessories like locks and sensors. You will get alerts whenever the accessory detects something. For instance, if you are using a door sensor, you will receive an alert when the door opens.

How to Set Up Notifications for HomeKit Accessories on iPhone and iPad

Do note that some accessories might not support notifications. Step #1. Open the Home app on your iOS device and then navigate to the accessory you want to receive notification from. Step #2. Now, you have to touch and hold the accessory icon. Step #3. Next, tap on Details. Step #4. Next up, tap on Status and Notifications. Step #5. Up next, you need to turn on Allow Notifications and then select from below options:

Time: You have the top option to set a time when you want to get alerts for your accessoryPeople: Receive alert for the accessory when you or someone arrives or leaves your house

To use this feature, make sure you have set up a home hub. (Go to Settings > Home and turn on Use this device as a Home Hub) Be sure everyone who you want to control your home has to Share My Location turned on. Besides, they must have a primary device selected in Settings → [your name] → iCloud → Share My Location. You can select any of the options. Step #6. In the end, tap on the Back button in the upper-left corner and then tap on Done to confirm. Going forward, you will receive alerts from your accessories while you are at home. If you want to get the notification even when you are away from Home, you need to set up a Home hub.

How to Set Up iPad as a Home Hub

Step #1. Open the Settings on your iPad and tap on your [your name]. Step #2. Now, tap on iCloud. Step #3. Tap on Keychain → turn on iCloud Keychain. Step #4. Then, go back to Settings → Home and turn on Use this iPad as a Home Hub. You can check the status of your home hub in the Home app on your iOS device. To do so, Open the Home app → tap on the tiny arrow in the upper-left corner. Then look under Home Hubs to find out if your home hub is connected. In case you have multiple home hubs set up, the primary home hub will appear as connected. The other home hubs will be on standby and get into action only if the primary one is disconnected.
